Ali Saunders: How we became friends.

Created by Alison 2 years ago
Ali was studying Psychology at Bristol university - I was too but a year above her - we met through a mutual friend but didn’t really get to know each other until we had both graduated and went to live in a shared country cottage in Crudwell, Wiltshire.  We (four of us: the two Alis, Mark and James) were experimenting with alternative lifestyles and Ali introduced me to macrobiotics, vegetarianism and meditation!  No TV, no radio, organic gardening and wok cookery. I had to help chop wood for the open fire (no central heating) and borrowed a bike to ride into the village to use the public phonebox - those were the days! Ali bought a motorbike and dismantled it as she said she should know how it all worked … but wasn’t quite sure how to put it back together! Somehow we kept in touch over the years, almost following a parallel path with us both becoming TEFL teachers (me working in Egypt and Ali in Israel), and later back in England visiting each other when I was back on holiday - I worked in Africa for many years. My husband and I eventually moved back to the UK; at first Bristol and later to Norfolk so I was able to visit Ali and John more often in their home in Suffolk. I have very fond memories of Ali and I am sure I echo all her friends and family when I say she will be very much missed.
